Blooming East

about the creation process

The minimalistic “black on white” portrait was envisioned and shot by Dasha Pears in her home studio in Helsinki, Finland. Dasha captured the stiillness of a meditative yoga tree pose, so the piece radiates with calmness and peace.

The shot was developed, edited, and printed on Hahnemühle Bamboo FineArt paper to be sent to San Francisco for the next phase of creating the mixed media 3 dimensional artwork.

Paula Pietranera finished the piece by adding 348 origami cranes folded from a single sheet of special paper.

The cranes are black, to support the darkness of the skin, and the simplicity of the clothes, yet all of those are opposed to the blank emptiness of the white background, again to symbolize the search for balance and equanimity, which is so characteristic of human existence.

Currently the piece is framed without a glass in a simple black wooden frame to display the beauty and interplay of paper textures.
